Takoradi barber found dead in shop

James Opoku, 43, popularly known as Nana Yaw, was found dead inside his barbershop at Time Enterprise, New Site, in the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality on Sunday.

The discovery was made after his wife, Christina Mensah, grew concerned when repeated attempts to reach him by phone went unanswered. She then sent their son, Shadrach, to check on his father and collect pocket money for the day.

Shadrach told Connect FM’s Abraham Mensah that the shop’s entrance was locked from the inside. After knocking several times and calling out his father’s name without a response, he entered the containerized shop—only to find Opoku’s lifeless body near the entrance.

“There were signs of a struggle,” Shadrach reported. “He appeared to have crawled several yards from his mattress toward the door.”

Christina Mensah corroborated her son’s account and revealed that her late husband had been sleeping in the shop to prevent theft.

“He’s been sleeping here for a while. Thieves have broken into the shop several times, so he decided to stay inside at night,” she explained.

When asked if her husband had any underlying health conditions or had shown signs of illness the previous day, Christina responded, “He was healthy and full of life… I don’t know what took his life.”

She also mentioned that their third child had visited him at the shop the previous evening.

“He usually didn’t allow the kids to stay at the shop because he felt they might disturb his work. So he told her to go home and return the next day,” she added.

The body has been transferred to a local mortuary, pending an autopsy and further investigation by the Ghana Police Service.
