The Political Language…

The residents of Awoshie in Accra yesterday dominated online news portals for the very obvious reasons.

The resident numbering over hundred blocked major roads in the community to protest the rate of accidents allegedly caused by a malfunctioning traffic light.

According to the residents, the traffic light has not been functioning for over three months.

During the protest, they claimed that some of these accidents have led to the death of some members of the community.

The roadblock which occurred around 8:00 am, on Tuesday morning caused major traffic congestion for commuters in and around the vicinity.

Interestingly, when the residents decided to assert their rights through a demonstration Police and military personnel were deployed to the place to bring calm to the agitated residents who had gathered around the traffic light to protest.

The Paper is of the view that the only reason that security personnel were deployed instead of officials from the appropriate state agency whose duty it is to fix the traffic tells that politicians that the electorates vote for are just no longer thinking.

The fully armed security officers who were deployed to the place in any case cannot fix the traffic light except to serve as a suppressive agents of state to cow the resident into submission.

It is the considered opinion of this paper that as a nation it is about time we drifted from being a reactive nation to a much proactive one as pertains in countries where politicians are voted to think about the welfare citterns.

Sadly in Ghana it is just the reverse. The only political language our politicians understand is demonstrations.

The Paper will not be surprised to see officials from the Highways Authority or whichever agency mandated to fix that traffic light on the road this morning because demonstration is the language politicians can relate to.
