Former Barcelona star Thierry Henry has thrown his support behind Raphinha as a strong contender for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
The legendary Frenchman believes the Brazilian winger deserves serious consideration after a sensational season for the Blaugrana.
Raphinha continued his impressive form on Tuesday night, playing a pivotal role in Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Benfica in the Champions League Round of 16. The Brazilian was directly involved in all three goals, further solidifying his reputation as one of Europe’s most in-form attackers.
His performance against Benfica was just another highlight in what has been an extraordinary campaign. Across all competitions, Raphinha has amassed an astonishing 27 goals and 19 assists, numbers that have fueled growing calls for his inclusion in the Ballon d’Or race.
While Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah remains the favorite in the eyes of many, Henry believes Raphinha has now edged ahead in the race for football’s most prestigious individual award.
Speaking on CBS Sports after Barcelona’s Champions League triumph, Henry made his case for Raphinha’s candidacy.
“He’s up there. For me, Raphinha is ahead now. He has scored 11 goals in the Champions League,” Henry stated.
“Of course, Salah is a great candidate, Harry Kane is in the mix, and Dembélé could be a contender depending on his performances. But if you shine in the Champions League and win your league, you have a real chance,” he added.
Henry also pointed out that Raphinha’s goal tally is even more impressive given that only one of his goals has come from the penalty spot, unlike other top contenders who frequently take penalties.
“I’m not saying what Kane or Salah have done isn’t incredible—it absolutely is. But we need to talk more about Raphinha. What he is doing, in addition to his defensive work, is remarkable. A complete forward doesn’t just score; they press, defend, support the full-back, and contribute all over the pitch. Raphinha does it all,” Henry said.
With Barcelona still competing for trophies in different competitions, Raphinha has a great chance to prove himself even more. If he keeps playing well and helps Barca win the Champions League, Henry’s prediction might come true.
