TVET is a Hub for Economic Development – Manager

Mrs Lydia Duvor, the Institute Manager of the New Century Career Training Institute (NCCTI) at Dansoman in Accra, has described Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a hub for economic development.

Mrs Duvor said TVET institutions were the major producers of employers because after training, the individual trainee was equipped for creating businesses based on the skills that were thought and practiced over time.

She made the comments during an interview with the Ghana News Agency after the NCCTI’s third matriculation ceremony to officially usher in new entrants into the Institute.

She called on teachers to be committed in delivering their best to the training of both new entrants and continuing trainees to help produce the best for the country.

There were 202 new trainees who matriculated, out of which 126 were males and 70 were females poised to pursue one of the 10 specialisations offered by the Institute.

Mrs Duvor noted that the Institute, which was established in 2000, had largely been dominated by males until the introduction of catering.

She urged parent to encourage their wards to take up TVET career because everything about the country’s development was surrounded by skills acquisition and that was why the NCCTI offered entrepreneurial skills.

The elective courses by the Institute were catering, plumbing, electronics, dressmaking, carpentry and joinery, computer hardware, electrical installation, building draughtsmanship, leather works and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning.

The Institute Manager said every individual should try to acquire a skill because a skill acquired and practiced consistently could never be taken from him/her, which significantly reduced dependency on government for employment.

She urged the youth to enrol in any of the branches of the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) dotted across the country to acquire skills that would help in establishing them than to waste their youthful exuberance on social vices.

She encouraged everyone enrolled in any NVTI and particularly the NCCTI to acquire skills, which had the potential to transform their lives economically.

She called on stakeholders to assist the Institute with more equipment to assist in the effective training for the trainees.
