The Ghana Education Service has interdicted two watchmen at Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School following an alleged sexual assault involving a special needs student.
The two suspects have been arrested and handed over to the Police to assist with investigations.
According to a statement issued by the GES and signed by its Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, the Service received a “disturbing report” of the alleged incident. Preliminary information indicates that the student, who is on medication, suffered a relapse on the day of the incident and required medical attention. It was during this period that the alleged assault occurred.
The GES said it took immediate administrative action by interdicting the two watchmen while the Police investigate the matter. The Service stated that thorough investigations are currently ongoing and that appropriate sanctions will be applied based on the outcome, in accordance with the GES Code of Conduct and the laws of Ghana.
The Service has cautioned all staff to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and to protect the safety, dignity and wellbeing of every student. It further emphasised that it will not tolerate any conduct that compromises the safety and wellbeing of students.

The Ministry of Education has also condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has directed the GES to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and submit a report. He has also ordered the Service to ensure the student receives appropriate medical care and counselling and to restore her boarding status with immediate effect.
