UG Medical Centre Not Ready for Use – Agyeman-Manu

Health Minister, Kweku Agyeman-Manu, has said poor negotiations regarding the management of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) is to be blamed for the delay in using the health post.

He gave the assurance that the facility will be used when fully completed.

The first phase of the facility was inaugurated by former President John Dramani Mahama in November 2016 but has since not been put to use.

Speaking at the commemoration of the 2018 World Health Day in Accra on Wednesday, 11 April 2018, Mr Agyeman-Manu said the facility was far from completion when it was inaugurated by Mr Mahama.

To that end, he said, there is the need to allow it to be fully completed before using it.

“Those who claimed the place is completed, I’m the minister and I want to tell the Ghanaian population that the place is not completed, you cannot run Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and imaging equipment on the national grid, that sees a semblance of going up and down like that.

“The back-up generator is not there yet, so, we should operationalise and spoil the equipment? I would not go there…”

“There’re certain little things that have not been done yet, so, why the rush?” he quizzed.

“I don’t want to go into it but some of the issues in there, if some of you will care and come close and look at the documentation and how the place was being structured to be managed, you’ll weep for this country”.
