Manchester United have made a third offer for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, with the deal potentially rising to £70 million.
The bid includes an initial £65 million fee, plus £5 million in add-ons.
Brentford have not yet responded to the latest offer. However, United remain confident of completing the deal and had hoped to finalise it before flying to the United States on Tuesday for their pre-season tour.
United manager Ruben Amorim is keen to work with Mbeumo during the team’s 13-day stay in Chicago, where they will play three pre-season matches. The club has also been linked with Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, but Mbeumo has always been their main target.
The 25-year-old Cameroon international had an impressive season, scoring 20 goals in the Premier League. Several clubs, including Tottenham, now managed by former Brentford coach Thomas Frank, showed interest in him. But Mbeumo has expressed a desire to join Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Brentford striker Yoane Wissa is attracting interest from Newcastle United, which could leave the club with a need to rebuild its attacking line.
Last season, Amorim repeatedly voiced frustration about United’s poor finishing. The team only scored 44 league goals, their lowest total since being relegated in 1973-74.
So far this summer, United have added forward Matheus Cunha and defender Diego Leon. If Mbeumo joins, Bruno Fernandes may be moved into a deeper midfield role, as Amorim plans to use Cunha in one of the two attacking positions behind the main striker.
The signing could also push current out-of-favour forwards, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony, further out of the picture.
Manchester United will kick off their new Premier League season at home against Arsenal on 17 August.
