Unpaid road contractors storm Fidelity Bank over reduced payments

Some frustrated road contractors have besieged the head office of Fidelity Bank in Accra after they were directed there for payment by government.

The contractors who say they have not been paid for jobs done for some years now are accusing government resorting to schemes to shortchange them.

Some of the aggrieved contractors who spoke to Starrfm.com.gh said they have been made to sign several documents, some of which commit them to accept a reduction of their debt, at the bank, but the debt has still not been paid.

“We have signed different documents. They say they are bond documents. One of them I signed this morning I notice my money has been reduced but at this point I just need my money, I’m desperate. I’m losing my home and I can’t continue like this,” Yaw Fosu said.

He further noted that this is the second time in three weeks they have been made to report to the bank for payment but nothing as has happened so far.

“They are using this means to buy time. They keep asking us to come here but nothing really happens when you come. They want to drag us into next year but they are not being straight. The staff here will just be giving you documents to sign, when you ask them why you are being to to sign, they have no information for you but because we are desperate we sign them anyway”.

Other angry contractors said the government is starving their families.

“Some of us have regretted working and investing our money into these projects. Others have lost homes and families, the pain is just too much and they keep tossing us. For more than three years, I have not been paid a dime and nobody knows how i survive. I’m tired of borrowing from friends and family,” George Kissi fumed.
