Urgent Action Needed to Complete Nsawam Maternity Ward Project – Annoh-Dompreh

The Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has called on the government to urgently release funds for the completion of the stalled maternity ward project at the Nsawam Government Hospital.

The project, initiated by the MP in 2021, was designed to expand maternal healthcare infrastructure and improve conditions for pregnant women and nursing mothers in Nsawam and surrounding communities. However, work has slowed significantly since the change of government following the 2024 general elections.

Speaking to the media after inspecting the project alongside constituency executives and party members on Tuesday, Annoh-Dompreh expressed dissatisfaction with the current level of work completed. He revealed that the contractor had been unable to proceed at the expected pace due to funding challenges.

The inspection offered the MP an opportunity to assess the project’s status and engage hospital management on the obstacles hindering its completion.

“By the end of the year, we should be putting finishing touches,” Annoh-Dompreh stated, while appealing to the government to settle outstanding financial obligations to the contractor so that construction could resume at full capacity.

During a separate meeting with hospital management, the MP stressed that the project should not be abandoned, as its benefits would serve residents regardless of their political affiliations.

He acknowledged that the original contract did not cover the full cost of furnishing the ward with beds and medical equipment. Annoh-Dompreh indicated his readiness to explore alternative funding sources to ensure that the facility, once completed, would be fully equipped and operational.

Rejecting suggestions that his position in opposition should limit his ability to pursue development for his constituents, Annoh-Dompreh argued that public-funded projects should continue irrespective of which party controls government.

“Parliamentarians represent constituents, not political parties alone,” he said, adding that governance is a continuum and that one administration inherits responsibilities that belong to the state.

He therefore urged the government to treat the maternity ward as a public-interest project rather than a political one.

Hospital management also expressed concern over the delays and appealed to the government to expedite action to ensure the timely completion of the facility.
