Ursula: Parliament Needs Experienced MPs

Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West who also doubles as the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has emphasized the importance of retaining experienced MPs during the upcoming NPP primaries and general elections.

She underscored the vital role played by seasoned legislators in educating and mentoring new members, emphasizing knowledge transfer for the effective functioning of the legislative body.

She urged delegates of various political divide and Ghanaians in general to strongly consider keeping experienced MPs in office.

The Minister noted that the resignation of a significant number of seasoned MPs from both political parties could pose substantial challenges for the next administration in Parliament.

The Ablekuma West MP, made the remarks in an interview on United Television adding that, knowledge transfer from veteran parliamentarians is crucial for the effective functioning of the legislative body.

Recognizing the demanding nature of parliamentary work, Ursula underscored the importance of prioritizing the education of new MPs to ensure their effective participation in legislative processes.

“Next Parliament will suffer. The majority of the MPs bowing out are very experienced. So we, the experienced ones who have decided to continue the race, I’ll urge the delegates to consider that and retain us” she said.

Female President

Reacting to a question on when she thinks Ghana would have a female president.

She answered that, the time is getting nearer when women will be at the helm of affairs in the West African country.

“God’s time is the best. I am a servant, so in whatever capacity I am ready to serve. The time will come when a woman will be president. I remember saying this some time ago at a programme where I represented the NPP. I specifically said that we should get to a point where the two largest political party will appoint women as their flagbearers.

“This angered Papa Kwesi Nduom because his smaller party had appointed a female running mate but my argument was that the two largest political parties should give women that opportunity because that is the only time where we will be rest assured women can win to become president”.

Advise

She further advised the youth of Ghana to take advantage of the opportunities the internet presents.

She indicated that, there are several opportunities available online that the youth can resort to and not just wait for the government to employ them.

“Opportunities abound, so don’t sit and say you want a job with a ministry or a company. People are learning from YouTube and are making use of the opportunities available there. These skills online can help you make some money to supplement what you have or provide you with funds.

“Do not waste your data online and use it for things that are wasteful. The opportunities exist, and these skills have ready jobs even outside Ghana. You can work for companies outside and be paid in their currency, so don’t joke; take advantage of the internet,” she added.
