VIDEOS: Dangers of Tramadol Abuse; Distressed Young Guy

“It is important we let people know that abusing medicines like Tramadol can have bad consequences, including death,” Delese Mimi Darko, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Food & Drugs Authority (FDA), says.

“So while we are doing our part to ensure that Tramadol is not abused, the media must also highlight the negative effect this can have on the individual and the society. Excess amounts, regular use or overuse can cause side effects, many of which can be dangerous and may affect the brain in ways very similar to illegal drugs,” she adds.

The country’s drug and food regulatory body is faced with the task of ending the abuse of unapproved dosage of the man-made narcotic painkiller- Tramadol- that is allegedly smuggled into the country.

Alarming reports of Tramadol abuse, particularly among the youth who take it for recreational reasons in parts of the country, have become an issue of great national concern, calling for immediate intervention.

Reported incidence of addiction, armed robbery, youth vandalism, car accidents and in some cases violence have been linked to the influence of unapproved intake of Tramadol by perpetrators.

With all these talks from expects to end the abuse of the tramadol, some youths in certain parts of the country are still frequent with the abuse of the drug.

With videos exclusive to this portal, thepublisheronline.com , a young man is seen dramatized yesterday  August 20 around the hours of 8:00pm at Lapaz, a popular area name here in Accra.

According to the FDA, its recent swoops in some communities known for the abuse of drugs revealed a decline in abuse.

The authority attributed the decline to its recent efforts to clamp down on the abuse and sale of illicit drugs and Tramadol.

Meanwhile A medical doctor has warned that the abuse of strong pain reliever, Tramadol destroys the kidney, liver and cause the eye to become smaller in size.

According to Dr Justice Yankson, aside the destruction to the sensitive organs of the body, excessive dose of the drug leads to diarrhoea. Abuse of the drug have dire consequences “on virtually all other parts of the human body” he said.

He wants those in charge of the enforcement of the law to intensify their operations and bring under control, the rising cases of abuse of the medication which in some instances, causes seizures leading to death.
