Vigilante Groups: We’ll Disband Ours If NPP Does Same

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed its readiness to disband the party’s newly formed vigilante group.

However, he said the party would only do that if the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) disband their vigilante groups as well.

In a statement signed and issued by the General Secretary of the party, Asiedu Nketiah said “…we wish to emphasize our readiness to order the disbandment of these groups provided and only if, President Akufo-Addo shows signs of readiness to protect the lives and property of our members by disarming and disbanding the NPPs numerous vigilante groups; arresting and prosecuting all NPP members who have been cited for various breaches of the law through vigilantism…”

This follows after the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) condemned the recent endorsement of newly-formed vigilante groups (Hawks, Dragons and Lions) of the NDC.

NCCE noted that the creation of vigilante group’s breads political tension and political intolerance with the tendency to destroy all the gains made under the 4th Republic.

Reacting to the condemnation, the NDC General Secretary quizzed “So where was the NCCE in 2015, when the then Candidate Akufo-Addo recruited and brought in mercenaries to train and establish the para-military wings of the New Patriotic Party?”

According to him, the condemnation has come too late in the day, when the NPP vigilante groups were allowed to perpetrate the acts of injustice to their members for long.

He said the mandate of their newly formed groups is to protect the interest of the party, and further stated that they will disband the groups if the NPP do same.
