Vybz Kartel Eyes December Concert At Accra Stadium

Jamaican dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel is reportedly planning a major concert in Accra this December.

Known globally as “Worl’ Boss,” the iconic artist, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, has already taken steps to secure the Accra Sports Stadium for the event.

This information was shared by Ghanaian sports journalist Gary Al-Smith, who revealed that Kartel’s team has inquired about the availability of the 40,000-seater stadium. The venue has hosted some of Ghana’s biggest musical names, including Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, and could soon welcome one of dancehall’s most legendary figures.

If confirmed, this would be one of the biggest international music events in Ghana this year and a historic moment for African fans of Kartel. His comeback has already made waves after he was released from prison following 13 years behind bars. Jamaica’s Court of Appeal recently overturned his murder conviction and ruled out a retrial, opening the door for his return to the global stage.

Vybz Kartel’s first post-prison concert was held at Jamaica’s National Stadium, which has a 35,000 capacity. That show, dubbed a “worldwide dancehall revival,” featured amazing performances, including one by Ghana’s own Shatta Wale.

The two stars have formed a strong musical alliance, and during the Jamaican concert, Kartel publicly honoured Shatta Wale, calling him the “King of African Dancehall.”

That performance, plus past Kartel shows, which included popular artistes like Popcaan and Skillibeng, who have worked with stars such as DJ Khaled and Nicki Minaj, have made fans expect another big show with many famous performers in Ghana. People in the music industry believe the Accra concert could bring in top international names and help Ghana become even more popular for global music events.

The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has confirmed talks are underway.

“For Vybz Kartel, what I can say is that there has been engagement, there has been contact, and for now, that is all I can say,” he told Citi Sports.

Still, the possible concert has sparked concerns from football fans. The Accra Sports Stadium pitch has suffered damage in the past due to non-sporting events. One recent example is Kumasi’s Baba Yara Stadium, which was banned from hosting CAF Category A matches after a large church event left the pitch in poor shape.

Ampofo Ankrah said measures will be put in place to manage both sporting and entertainment activities.

“The facility is not only the pitch; we have other amenities that can be used equitably,” he explained.

If all goes smoothly, Vybz Kartel’s December concert could go down as one of the most unforgettable nights in Ghana’s entertainment history.
