We’ll reject any flawed election results come Dec. – Mahama warns EC

Former President John Dramani Mahama has once again sent a strong signal to the Electoral Commision of Ghana indicating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would not accept the results of a flawed election come December 2020.

The latest caution by the NDC comes after the party alleged that the EC was deliberately taking out names of its members from the newly compiled voters’ register after omissions were identified in some polling stations across the country during the ongoing exhibition exercise.

Speaking at a press briefing on the integrity of Ghana’s voter register at the party headquarters in Accra, Mr Mahama said, “We in the NDC have exhibited restraint at all times in this electoral process, even now we are committed to doing so. But we will not accept the result of a flawed election.”

He continued, “We will certainly not look on, neither will we shirk our civic responsibility and allow the EC, whether it intends to or sheer incompetence to usurp the peoples mandate in the December 7 polls. We want to see fairness, transparency, and integrity in the process leading up to the elections. The EC will take responsibility and act in good faith to resolve them,”

Ghana goes to polls

Ghana will go to the polls on December 7, this year to elect a President and members of parliament to steer affairs of the nation for the next four years.

But the former President said in spite of the party’s commitment to a peaceful electoral process, it found it strange that for the first time in the Fourth Republic, the Electoral Commission (EC) was compiling a new voters register barely six months to the general election.

“Never have we, in the history of the Fourth Republic, experienced such a strange situation where six months to an election, we are all not sure what register we will be using for voting,” he said.

Timing of register

Mr Mahama said the timing of the compilation of a new voters register barely six months to the general election would not allow the participation of all eligible voters.

“Never have we, in the history of the Fourth Republic, experienced a situation where large numbers of our population are threatened to be disenfranchised because of bungling inefficiency and perceived partiality of our once revered EC,” he said.
