The Nose is a very important organ that helps us to breathe and smell things around us. The hairs in our nose clean the air of foreign particles as air moves through the nasal passages. Many people around the world being it professors, teachers, lawyers, doctors, lecturers, bankers, traders, kings, queens etc are caught picking their nose with their hands.
Picking of nose is a habit mostly found in children, but resent times it is adults who are found in doing that more often without knowing the side effect or some are also negligent about the effect or some even don’t kwon.
Most people pick their nose in the office, house, school, church, and workplace. Noses that are dry or overly moist may be irritating but a quick pick can relive some discomfort. Many people pick their nose out of boredom or a nervous habit but allergies and sinus infections can increase the amount of mucus in the nose. In rare situations, picking of nose is a compulsive, repetitive behavior which cannot be stopped. Nose picking may not be socially acceptable, but it’s rarely dangerous. The mucous membranes constantly produce wet mucus that eliminates pathogens flowing through the nasal cavity. Not all mucus stays fluid enough and the ones closer to the opening is relatively dry and it can cause irritation leading to evoke itching.
This provocation can be irresistible especially when the part is visible from outside. Picking your nose with your hands can cause nose bleeding and nasal infection because we use our hands for day to day activities and this part of the body is more vulnerable to catching virus, fungus or bacteria’s. Now if you put that dirty finger inside your nose, you are literally giving a free entry to the pathogens and this can lead to common skin infection such as vestibulitis which can be developed within the nostril openings.
This might rip apart the fragile skin inside your nose leading to serious nose bleeding conditions and it can take two months to recoup. Fingernails can leave tiny cuts in your nasal tissue; potentially dangerous bacteria can find their ways into these openings and cause infections. Scratching and digging in your nose may break or rupture delicate blood vessels which can lead to bleeding of nose. Consistently picking of nose can create sore in your nose and regular nose picking may damage the septum and even cause a hole in your nose. Picking your nose can also develop folliculitis which is basically growth of pimples inside the nose hair follicles. You can also be infected with staphylococcus Aureus bacteria which can travel through your blood all the way to your brain. If you consistently pick your nose, you can damage your septum which may even result in a hole in your septum. Picking your nose is not only a bad habit that can have a very poor impression on the other person but it can also jeopardize your health slowly and eventually. We all do it one way or the other without even noticing it. In case you end up doing it excessively, it can pose serious health issues and one must learn how to treat or protect the nose.
Picking of nose is a bad habit that is very hard to break; especially those that start in children and ways that one can stop are; carry a tissue or handkerchief with you whenever you go out and use it to blow your nose when you get the urge to pick it. This will help you break the habit and is more sanitary than putting your fingers in your nose. Drink lots of water daily, staying hydrated will help keep your nose clear and moist so you are less likely to feel the need to pick your nose.
Also glow your fingernails out so when you feel like picking your nose it will be uncomfortable and painful. You can also bandage your finger that you use to pick your nose and these can save you from damaging your nose. Picking of nose is a dangerous habit that needs to be stopped at any cause.
