Why You Should Try Celibacy

Sex is arguably an important part of a relationship. However, people are engaging in this scared activity like it’s just a game where you play with every team that fits.

Celibacy is the state of voluntarily being unmarried, sexually abstinent, or both, usually for religious reasons. However, there are plenty of people who undertake it for secular reasons — as a lifestyle choice.

Here are simple reasons why choosing to take a vow of celibacy can actually make your personal, romantic, and sexual lives so much healthier.

1. Celibacy makes you appreciate sex more

You know the expression “Absence makes the heart grow fonder?” It applies for sex too. Taking yourself out of the sex game for a while can help you figure out what you miss (and what you don’t) about intercourse.

2. It prevents STDs

While we’re told that regular sex is good for health, STDs are not. Not all of us are able to find a loving, monogamous, disease-free relationship, and, besides that, abstinence is the only 100 percent effective method of birth control and disease prevention.

3. It boosts (non-sexual) intimacy

Your connection with your partner gets deeper because you learn to spend more time together and learn more about each other outside the sexual activities.

4. It’s empowering

Choosing whether or not to do something gives a sense of control and purpose in our lives. A sex-free lifestyle frees up a tremendous amount of brain and emotional space that the strategizing, analyzing and agonizing over our sex lives often fills.

5. Your judgement will be clear in the dating game

When you’re lusting after the new person in your life, your judgement can often be clouded by the rose-tinted-sex-driven glasses you’re wearing.

While celibacy may sound like an extreme choice to some, it is liberating to others. Remember: it doesn’t have to be forever.
