Women ‘Sweep’ Farmers Awards at Tarkwa-Nsuaem


The Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal celebration of this year’s edition of the National Farmers’ Day, was observed at Wassa Simpa, where three women stole the show as overall best, first runner-up and second runner-up respectively.

Madam Agnes Baah, 58, from Simpa, emerged the Overall Best farmer, out of the total 15 selected for recognition while Madam Elizabeth Awo-Wugah, 65, from Esuom, took the 1st Runner-up District Best Farmer with Madam Hannah Wilson, 40, from Tamso, picking the 2nd Runner-up District Best Farmer.

The overall winner cultivates cocoa, rubber, cassava, cocoyam, plantain, pepper, sugarcane and rice, and also rears local fowels and small ruminants

For her prize, sponsored by Gold Fields Limited, she received a deep freezer, sewing machine, full wax print, a wheel barrow, 10 bags of fertilizer, machete, Wellington Boots, shovel, Knapsack sprayer, Mist blower, a certificate and a ‘T-‘ Shirt.

The 1st runner-up, who also produces various crops, was presented with a number of items, sponsored by Anglo Gold Ashanti while Madam Wilson also took home some prizes.

In an address, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Mr Gilbert Ken Asmah, disclosed that under the government’s flagship “Planting for Food and Jobs” policy, a total of 1,095 farmers had been registered, electronically and had received 3,909 bags of fertilizer, 180 bags of cereal and 163 sachets of vegetable seed.

Additionally, he indicated that about 700 farmers had also accessed different facilities under the programme.
