Yorke Eyes Black Stars Coaching Job

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has declared his interest in becoming the next head coach of the Black Stars following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.

Yorke is among the notable names linked to the vacant position after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Portuguese coach mutually parted ways following Ghana’s poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Black Stars suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before losing 4-2 at home to Gambia, leaving Ghana bottom of Group C without a point after two matches.

Speaking to The Guardian, Yorke said Ghana’s football history and the quality of players available make the coaching job an attractive opportunity. However, he stressed the need to build the right team culture and secure the players’ commitment.

“It’s a job I’d be interested in, given Ghana’s history and the players available,” Yorke said.

He explained that his interest in the position began after discussions with an agent, although news of the conversation reached the media earlier than he expected.

“You look at the squad, and your eyes open even wider. The conversation [I had with an agent regarding my interest in coaching the Black Stars] started there and then reached the media before I really knew it.

“The talent is there. Build the culture and get the players to buy in, and the football will follow.”

Yorke brings international coaching experience, having managed the Trinidad and Tobago national team from November 2024 to March 2026.

Before taking up the national team role, the former Manchester United forward coached Australian top-flight side Macarthur FC. He signed a two-year contract with the club in July 2022 but was dismissed in 2023.

Following Queiroz’s exit, the GFA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports appointed an interim technical team to manage the Black Stars while efforts continue to address the team’s challenges.

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has been named interim head coach, with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram serving as assistants. Former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been appointed goalkeeper trainer.

The interim technical team will lead Ghana in the November doubleheader against Somalia in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Having missed out on the 2025 AFCON, the Black Stars face mounting pressure to turn their campaign around and secure victories in their upcoming matches.
