Defender Alexander Djiku has been ruled out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup through injury, a development that has forced Ghana to call-up of Pafos FC defender Derrick Luckassen as his direct replacement in the Black Stars camp.
The experienced centre-back Djiku had been a key part of the Black Stars squad and was expected to play an important role as Ghana prepare for the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States. However, concerns about his fitness grew after he arrived late at the team’s training camp in Cardiff.
Djiku last played for his club, Spartak Moscow, on May 24, 2026. Reports suggested that he arrived in camp carrying an injury, raising doubts about whether he would be fit enough for the World Cup. The Black Stars technical team closely monitored his condition while continuing preparations for the tournament.
The uncertainty surrounding Djiku’s fitness forced the coaching staff to consider alternative options in defence. As a result, Pafos FC defender Derrick Luckassen was drafted into the Black Stars camp to provide cover in central defence.
Luckassen’s inclusion gives head coach Carlos Queiroz another option at the back as the team continues its final preparations. The defender has enjoyed an impressive season with Cypriot club Pafos FC, where he scored six goals from defence and helped the team win the Cyprus Cup.
The 29-year-old also made his Black Stars debut earlier this year in a friendly match against Germany in March. His performances at club level and recent introduction to the national team made him a strong candidate to strengthen Ghana’s defence.
The situation became clearer when Queiroz officially confirmed that Djiku would miss the World Cup. Speaking to journalists at Cardiff City Stadium on Monday, June 1, before Ghana’s international friendly against Wales, the Black Stars coach announced that the defender would be replaced.
“We have to make a decision and replace Djiku. Doesn’t matter the players that are called. Djiku was replaced,” Queiroz said.
Djiku’s absence is a significant blow to Ghana’s World Cup ambitions. Over the years, he has been one of the Black Stars’ most dependable defenders, providing leadership and stability at the back. Losing such an experienced player shortly before the tournament presents a major challenge for the coaching staff.
His injury now leaves Queiroz with an important decision regarding Ghana’s central defensive partnership. While Luckassen appears to be one of the leading candidates to fill the gap, the coach and his technical team will continue evaluating their options as they seek the best defensive combination for the World Cup.
