Fifteen (15) people were killed instantly and 25 others injured in a horrific head-on collision between a container truck and a passenger bus at Peki-Tsame in the Volta Region on Tuesday morning.

The devastating accident occurred near the Peki Senior High School, leaving mangled wreckage and scenes of grief as emergency responders battled to rescue trapped passengers.

The crash involved a Mercedes-Benz container truck, registration number WR 1553-C, travelling from Nkwanta to Accra, and a Mercedes-Benz passenger bus, registration number GR 3215-E, travelling from Battor to Kabiti in the Oti Region.

A total of 40 people, including men, women and children, were on board the two vehicles when disaster struck.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) at Peki Fire Station rushed to the scene and worked tirelessly to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage. Twenty-five injured people, including two children, were rescued and transported to the Peki Government Hospital for treatment.

Sadly, 15 passengers, nine men and six women, were pronounced dead.

Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, ADO1 Hope Bedzrah, said preliminary investigations suggested the tragedy resulted from a head-on collision.

“When our personnel arrived, they found the two vehicles locked in a head-on crash. Rescue operations began immediately to save those trapped,” he said.

The bodies of the deceased were handed over to the Ghana Police Service and deposited at the Peki Government Hospital mortuary pending identification and further procedures.
