Former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has broken her silence on the assassination attempt on her life, issuing a detailed statement that raises fundamental questions about public safety, the administration of justice, and the protection of women in Ghanaian society.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, 2026, saw multiple gunshots fired at the prominent lawyer and politician in what she describes as a “very brazen assassination attempt.”
In a statement released to the press yesterday, Adwoa Safo expressed profound gratitude for her survival, revealing the emotional toll the incident has taken on her as a mother of two young children.
“With bullets flying all around me on that fateful Sunday morning, the thought of losing my life and leaving behind my two young children has been deeply distressing as a mother,” she stated. “I am eternally grateful to God for my life.”
The former lawmaker, who served the Dome-Kwabenya constituency for 12 years, expressed concern over what she perceives as a “lacklustre interest” in pursuing the perpetrators of the crime, warning of broader implications for public safety and the protection of vulnerable members of society.
“While I fully respect the right of every accused person to due process and the presumption of innocence, I believe it is equally important that the justice system is seen to be firm, fair, impartial, and sensitive to the experiences of victims, especially women,” Adwoa Safo asserted.
CLARIFYING THE FACTS
In her statement, Adwoa Safo moved to dispel widespread speculation regarding the motives behind the attack, explicitly denying that the incident relates to any leadership aspirations within the Kristo Asafo Church or disputes over church property and inheritance.
“I say with modesty that I am deeply blessed to be self-made and I have never sought to draw wealth or personal gain from my late father’s estate or properties,” she declared, emphasising her commitment to integrity and self-determination.
Instead, she clarified that her position centres on upholding the dying wishes of her late father, Apostle Kwadwo Safo, and enforcing the church’s amended constitution, which she says removed Israel Kwadwo Safo as leader of the Church and installed her as leader of the Kantanka Family in February 2025.
“On his death bed, my dad instructed me to ensure that this provision was expressly upheld, and I consider it my duty and responsibility to honour that directive as his first child,” she stated, attaching an extract of correspondence to the Church leadership.
The former MP also made it clear that her father did not die intestate, confirming the existence of a valid Will that sets out definitive provisions for the administration of his estate.
A CALL FOR JUSTICE
Adwoa Safo’s statement concluded with a powerful call for justice on multiple fronts: for her late father, for herself, for her family, for the Kristo Asafo Church, for the people of Dome-Kwabenya, and for the many women who continue to face intimidation in what she described as a “patriarchal society.”
“Justice must not only exist in principle,” she emphasised. “It must be seen, felt, and experienced by all. Justice must manifestly be seen to be done right to, and by all.”
The former MP expressed gratitude to her family, siblings, medical team, friends, well-wishers, and the Ghanaian people for their “immense support, prayers, encouragement, and goodwill messages” during this difficult period.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has yet to issue an official statement on the progress of investigations into the assassination attempt. Sources indicate that detectives are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area and interviewing potential witnesses.
The incident has reignited discussions about the safety of public figures and the effectiveness of Ghana’s justice system in handling cases involving violence against women in positions of influence.
Human rights organisations have called for a swift and transparent investigation, while political figures from across the spectrum have condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with the former MP.
