Arsenal defender William Saliba remains optimistic about his team’s chances of winning their first-ever UEFA Champions League title after securing a spot in the quarter-finals on Wednesday night.
The Gunners delivered a dominant 9-3 aggregate victory over PSV, demolishing the Dutch side 7-1 away before settling for a 2-2 draw at the Emirates in the return leg. This marks their second consecutive quarter-final appearance, having been eliminated by Bayern Munich last season with a narrow 3-2 aggregate defeat.
This time, Arsenal face an even bigger challenge as they prepare to take on defending champions Real Madrid in the last eight. Despite the club’s lack of Champions League silverware and their last final appearance dating back to 2006, Saliba believes Arsenal have a genuine chance to go all the way.
“Everyone wants to win the Champions League. It is really hard to win. But we all believe we can do it,” Saliba told the club’s media.
Arsenal are one of only two English clubs still in the competition, alongside Aston Villa. The remaining quarter-finalists include European giants Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund, all vying for the prestigious trophy.
Barcelona, who finished second in the league phase, eased past Benfica and will now face Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich take on Inter Milan, the tournament’s best defensive side so far.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa, under Unai Emery’s guidance, will battle Paris Saint-Germain, who dramatically knocked out league-phase winners Liverpool on penalties.
