Jordan Henderson Joins Chelsea on Two-Year Contract

England midfielder Jordan Henderson has completed a move to Chelsea after signing a two-year contract with the club.

The 36-year-old joined the Blues after he and Brentford agreed to end his contract by mutual consent.

Henderson brings a wealth of experience to Chelsea after enjoying a successful career in English and European football. During his time at Liverpool, he captained the team to the 2019-20 Premier League title, ending the club’s 30-year wait for the trophy. He also helped Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

In 2023, Henderson left Liverpool to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq. He later moved to Dutch club Ajax in January 2024 before returning to the Premier League with Brentford last summer. He made 32 league appearances for Brentford during the 2025-26 season.

Speaking after completing the move, Henderson expressed his excitement about joining Chelsea.

“Given the size of the club, the manager [Xabi Alonso] who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” said Henderson.

“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”

Henderson began his professional career at Sunderland, where he came through the club’s youth system. He made his Premier League debut on November 1, 2008, when he came on as a substitute in Sunderland’s 5-0 defeat to Chelsea.

The midfielder made his England debut in 2010 and has earned 91 international caps. He has represented England in seven major tournaments, including the UEFA European Championship final in 2021, where the Three Lions lost to Italy on penalties.

This summer, Henderson made history by becoming the first English player to appear in four different FIFA World Cups. He achieved the milestone when he came on as a late substitute in England’s 2-0 victory over Panama.

However, his World Cup campaign ended shortly afterwards. Henderson suffered a broken arm after falling awkwardly while trying to jump over the advertising boards following England’s 3-2 last-16 win over Mexico. He did not play in that match but had earlier received a booking while warming up after protesting against a decision made by the match officials.

Chelsea will hope Henderson’s experience will strengthen the squad after a disappointing league campaign. The Blues finished 10th in the Premier League last season, one point behind Brentford, and failed to qualify for European competition.

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has been very active in the transfer market. Henderson becomes the club’s 10th signing of the summer.

Chelsea also completed a club-record £117 million deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. Veteran striker Danny Welbeck joined from Brighton in a reported £5 million move, while midfielder Valentin Barco arrived from Strasbourg.

The club also signed defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta, winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting, striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, teenage left-back Denner from Corinthians and 17-year-old striker Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have continued to reshape their squad by allowing defender Trevoh Chalobah to leave after Italian side Como agreed a deal worth more than £30 million for his transfer.
