A 26-year-old supporter of Italian Serie A team Atalanta was tragically stabbed to death during violent clashes with Inter Milan fans in the northern city of Bergamo.
The Italy’s Carabinieri police confirmed the incident on Sunday May 4th, 2025.
The incident marks another disturbing episode of football-related violence in Italy. Just last month, 13 police officers were injured during clashes between AS Roma and Lazio supporters ahead of the Rome derby.
According to Carmelo Beringheli, head of the Carabinieri office in Bergamo, the confrontation began on Saturday night in a local pub when an Inter Milan fan shouted a provocative chant.
The argument escalated and spilled into a nearby street near Atalanta’s stadium, where an Inter supporter fatally stabbed the Atalanta fan. Emergency services responded quickly but were unable to save the victim.
A teenage boy has been arrested in connection with the incident. He reportedly told authorities that he acted to protect his brother.
Atalanta fans paid tribute to the deceased with a banner during their 4-0 Serie A win against Monza on Sunday. After the match, Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini said in a press conference, “What happened to our fan must never happen again.”
The club has not yet issued an official statement on the incident.
This tragic event follows other high-profile cases of fan violence involving Italian teams. In 2023, a Paris Saint-Germain supporter was seriously injured in Italy after being stabbed before a Champions League match against AC Milan.
That same year, a 58-year-old Newcastle United fan was hospitalized after being stabbed in Milan by hooded attackers on the eve of another Champions League game.
