Black Queens Move Up in FIFA Rankings

Ghana women’s national football team, the Black Queens, have moved up in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings, rising from 62nd to 59th in the April 2026 update.

The improvement shows steady progress as the team continues to rebuild and regain consistency after several difficult years. It also reflects growing confidence and better performances on the international stage.

In Africa, Ghana remain third, behind Nigeria and South Africa in the CAF rankings.

A major factor behind the rise is their strong performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the Black Queens won the bronze medal. That achievement added valuable ranking points and lifted morale within the squad.

The team also impressed during their qualification campaign for the 2026 WAFCON, where they recorded a dominant 7-0 aggregate victory over Egypt. The result highlighted their attacking strength and improved team organisation.

Since the appointment of coach Kim Björkegren, the Black Queens have shown clear tactical progress. The team now plays with better structure in build-up, improved movement in attack, and greater control during matches.

International exposure has also played a role, with friendly tournament appearances such as the Pink Ladies Cup helping to test the team against non-African opposition.

Wins over Russia and Hong Kong underlined their growing confidence on that stage.

The current ranking marks Ghana’s best position since 2019, although still short of their historical peak of 42nd in 2008.
