Brogya Genfi: I Will Collaborate With My Boss To Make The Military A Strong Force

Last Friday, Comrade Ernest Brogya Genfi, the outspoken member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), commanded attention as he engaged with the Parliamentary Vetting Committee, where he voiced his concerns and answered questions over his nomination to the position of Deputy Minister for Defence.

Answering to the questions, he pledged to work closely with the substantive Defence Minister, Dr Omane Boamah, to ensure that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is well-equipped and combat-ready to defend the nation against any external aggression.

He acknowledged that while the Ghana Armed Forces enjoys high respect from the population, some isolated incidents have strained the relationship between civilians and the military and need to be resolved with urgency.

Genfi pledged to support efforts to enhance civil-military engagement, particularly by helping his boss when approved and sworn into office to collaborate with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to educate civilians on the role of the military and promote mutual respect, alongside bridging the gap between the security forces and civilians.

“I hope that we will leave behind an Armed Forces that is ready for combat, well-equipped, and tooled to face any external aggression. I believe that the civil population has great respect for the Ghana Armed Forces, and I think there is an existing relationship between the civil populace and the military. However, the isolated unfortunate incidents are issues we must work on to reduce them to the barest minimum.

He added, “I am going to assist my minister in encouraging more civil-military engagement. The military can engage with MMDCEs to educate the public on their primary role and the respect that must be accorded to our security institutions. I am going to the ministry to assist my leader in fulfilling the President’s vision. Whatever needs to be done to compensate for the gap created, I will support my minister to achieve it”.

Brogya Genfi, an experienced politician and former Ashanti Regional Youth Organizer of the NDC, played a pivotal role in mobilizing grassroots support, particularly in strongholds traditionally dominated by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

His appointment is seen as a reward for his dedication to the party’s electoral success and a strategic move to strengthen the defence sector under the John Mahama administration.

As a key member in the party’s campaign machinery, Brogya Genfi was instrumental in galvanizing youth support across the country, especially in the Ashanti Region, where he aggressively campaigned to improve the NDC’s electoral performance.

He was seen campaigning aggressively in Ashanti with the NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah in the remote areas of the region.

His strong advocacy and media engagements helped shape the party’s message. During the campaign, he was noted for his relentless grassroots engagement, strategic communications, and mobilization of young voters.

His roles contributed significantly to the NDC’s ability to close the vote margin in opposition strongholds while consolidating gains in its traditional bases.

Brogya Genfi is expected to assist the substantive minister in overseeing Ghana’s defense policies, strengthening national security, and ensuring the welfare of the military.

Given his background in youth mobilization and political strategy, he is likely to focus on security policies that address internal threats, border security, and the well-being of military personnel.
