Cocoa Roads Must Be Built in Cocoa Growing Communities–Farmers

Cocoa Producers have urged government to prioritize the construction of cocoa roads in the hinterlands.

According to the president of the Cooperative Cocoa Farmers Association at Offinso, Alex Opoku Mensah, this will reduce the losses associated with the delays in transporting their produce.

The Deputy CEO of COCOBOD, Dr. Yaw Adu-Ampomah, recently disclosed that the ongoing audit of cocoa roads in the country must be completed before new contracts are awarded.

But, Mr. Opoku Mensah tells Citi Business News government must expedite the process.

“We have a problem with the cocoa roads. When government talks of cocoa roads, we expect it to refer to roads from where cocoa is produced. The hinterlands, that’s where the roads should be constructed,” he stressed.

“Currently we feel the cocoa roads are being constructed in the urban centers, which doesn’t augur well for us the cocoa farmers. So government should focus on constructing the cocoa roads in the hinterlands for us,” he added.

Audit of cocoa roads to end in May.

The Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Joseph Boahen Aidoo in July 2017 announced that the company was halting the construction of cocoa roads.

The halt, was to allow the company conduct a full audit into all road contracts to ensure that it does not strain its finances.
