COVID-19: 33 Ghanaians Die In New York

Some 33 Ghanaians are believed to have died from the novel coronavirus in New York, US alone. Ghana’s Ambassador to the US, Baffour Adjei Bawuah, is reported to have said in an interview with ABC news.

He is quoted as saying “Quite a number of Ghanaians have been affected and indeed we have 33 people who have been verified to have died from the disease in New York alone.”

Meanwhile, he says some Ghanaians have registered to return home.

According to him, among those who have registered are Ghanaian government officials who were on official assignments in the US before President Nana Akufo-Addo announced the closure of Ghana’s borders.

He stated that about 300 of those who have so far registered have sought assistance to return to Ghana.

He noted that “At the moment, about 300 people [Ghanaians] have expressed a situation where they believe that they are stranded and therefore want to come back home and…we are liaising with the US government particularly in connection with some [Ghanaian] students and some officials who came here and are stranded.”

“The students, in particular, are now living with host families and that has put a bit of pressure on these families but we are reasonably certain that by the end of this week, we would have been able to relay to the US government enough [information] for those people to be brought home.”

Also, some 200 Ghanaians in South Africa according to High Commissioner, George Ayisi Boateng, has reportedly registered to return to Ghana 200.
