Government has defended and justified the actions of gun-wielding National Security operatives who raided the private residence of former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, around 5:00 AM on Wednesday, 19 March 2025.
Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, on Thursday March 20, said the personnel who conducted the operations acted within the confines of the law and though a section of the public has expressed misgivings about the style, there are others who have accused the Attorney General’s office of being slow in investigating and prosecuting persons suspected to have looted public funds.
“Every search conducted is part of the government’s framework to fight corruption. We take full responsibility for these actions, and we want to make it clear that they were carried out in accordance with the law. Proper warrants were obtained and used in conducting these searches,” the Deputy Attorney General told journalists in Accra.
He added: “Concerns are on two sides. There are a group of people who believe that the AG is actually being slow, and there’s another group of people who are of the view that the AG is being aggressive.”
The raid saw about twenty armed men enter Dr. Addison’s home in Accra to conduct searches. The operation was led by Richard Jakpa, the Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat.
The Minority in Parliament, addressing journalists a day after the raid alleged that some jewellery of Dr. Addison’s wife and an amount of GHC100, 000 have not been found after search and are suspected to have been stolen.
“This morning, the Minority caucus is here to express its concerns about the growing lawless conduct of our National Security operatives, who have been unleashed on opponents, particularly the former NPP appointees of President Akufo-Addo. The aim is to intimidate and frustrate them,” Minority Leader, Osahen Afenyo-Markin noted.
The Minority Leader continued: “According to Jakpa, he had a warrant to search for a vault in which he believed Dr Addison had stored cash. They overpowered the security and forced their way in. This Rambo-style approach must stop.”
Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, however insists there was nothing untoward about the actions of the raiders:
“My boss, the Attorney General, is of the view, and his policy is that he will not put anyone before any court without having sufficient evidence to prosecute the person. So the reason for the delay we are seeing or what most of the public are seeing as delay is that we are making sure that we get it right, we get the evidence before we put someone in court”, Justice Srem-Sai noted.
He continued: “We’ve also witnessed instances where people have been put on trial for years without any evidence and without any conviction, without any trial, and they wake up, go to court, and they are just spending money on lawyers.”
Empty Susu Boxes
3news.com reports that the National Security operatives who did the search have denied taking any jewel or money as being alleged by the Minority in Parliament.
The said operatives say they would soon make public the full list of every item taken during the search.
They deny taking any money and insist that they found empty money storage boxes in Dr Addison’s home.
