WINNEBA UNDER ATTACK …3 Killed, 15 In Critical Condition

At least three people were killed in cold blood and 15 others seriously injured after a violent mob of about 300 armed men stormed the New Winneba township in the Central Region, and unleashed an unrestrained free-for-all attack on residents, yesterday, Tuesday September 1, 2026, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed.

“About 300 irate mob wielding guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed the New Winneba Township, and other stores and residence of the natives, attacked them and caused damage to properties,” a police statement signed on Tuesday by Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service in the Central Region said.

The statement said the injured victims, including a police officer who was on official duty, have been sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba.

The police statement confirmed that three persons were killed during the gun and cutlass attacks, which occurred at approximately 10:40 am on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the group moved through parts of the township, attacking residents and damaging stores and properties belonging to natives.

Security forces deployed

Police from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were quickly deployed to the scene to bring the situation under control.

The Inspector-General of Police has since ordered reinforcements, including two armoured vehicles from the National Headquarters, to bolster security in the area.

“The IGP has deployed a reinforcement team, including two armoured vehicles from the National Headquarters, to beef up security,” the statement added.

By 2:45 pm, the situation was “under control”, with personnel remaining on the ground to maintain order.

Investigation underway

The circumstances that triggered Tuesday’s violence remain unclear, and the identities of the deceased have not yet been released. Unverified reports allege it was over a land dispute.

Police have launched a full investigation into the incident and are working to establish what led to the attacks and the extent of property damage.

Residents of New Winneba have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to restore peace.

No arrests had been made as at press time Tuesday evening. The police statement said additional information would be made public when available.
