Ghana Post Goes Into Online Shopping

It has been said that doing away with the old and making way for the new is the essence of a growing economy and the Management of the Ghana Post Company Limited seem to have anchored on this motto only that, they are not discarding the old.

This time, they are venturing into online shopping as part of plans to revamp their services and to keep them relevant in the changing world.

According to the Deputy Manging Director for Finance and Administration at the Ghana Post, Mr. Kwaku Tabi Amponsah, his outfit is building an E-commerce platform that would allow Ghanaians, home and abroad to shop online.

The introduction of the e-commerce service is also to support companies engaged in buying and selling to advertise their products for free.

The online platform is expected to operate like other renowned online shops and would open up the Ghanaian markets to non-Ghanaian customers.

“Ghanaians can shop online and Ghana post will deliver. We are setting up Ghanaian companies both traditional and other retailers for people to be able to access and shop online,” Mr. Amponsah said on Accra based Starr FM.

World Post Day

This innovation and more are also part of plans to commemorate the World Post Day which is observed on October 9, every year.

In observing the importance of post offices across the globe, Mr. Amponsah said the Ghana Post will also introduce an electronic evaluation system for parcel.

This, he said, will enable its customers to easily know the amount they are supposed to pay on received parcels, particularly those sent from abroad.

Still Relevant?

On whether or not the Ghana Post is still relevant despite the digital migration that has hit Ghana in recent times, Mr. Amposah responded in the affirmative.

He therefore urged Ghanaians not to underplay the importance the post office services in Ghana.

“We are still relevant and we still provide the means of communication through letters, we also do other services that are relevant. We do parcel delivery, EMS services that have relevance in addition to the postal services,” he said.

Though facing numerous challenges, Mr. Amponsah revealed that the Ghana Post does not rely on government support.

He said, “For some time now the government has not invested in Ghana Post though the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government intends to invest and support us in creating investment through private sector participation but we have been self-sufficient so far. We generate our own income and take care of our employees ourselves.”
