Gold dominates Ghana’s exports, contributes GH¢412.5bn in 2025

Gold continued to dominate Ghana’s export performance in 2025, accounting for 63 percent of the country’s total exports and emerging as the single largest contributor to the value of goods traded during the year.

According to the Ghana Merchandise Trade, 2004–2025 report, gold accounted for a substantial portion of the GH¢654.7 billion total trade recorded by Ghana in 2025.

The report indicates that gold alone contributed GH¢412.46 billion to the country’s total trade value, underscoring the continued importance of the precious metal to Ghana’s international trade and foreign exchange earnings.

The figures were presented by the Government Statistician, Alhassan Iddrisu, on Tuesday, August 11, during the presentation of the Ghana Merchandise Trade report.

The dominance of gold in Ghana’s export figures highlights the country’s continued reliance on the mining sector, particularly gold production, as a major source of export revenue.

The latest figures also demonstrate the extent to which developments in the gold sector can influence Ghana’s overall external trade position.

The strong performance of gold also contributed to Ghana’s favourable trade position in 2025, with the country recording a trade surplus of GH¢148.3 billion.

Ghana’s GH¢148.3 billion surplus therefore indicates that the country earned more from its merchandise exports than it spent on imports during the period.
