Ghanaian Player Banned One Year for Attacking Referee with Stone

The Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Disciplinary Committee has suspended Elmina Sharks midfielder Jay Asamoah Kola for one year following his assault on match official Eso Doh Morrison during a Division One League match against Swedru All Blacks United FC on February 16, 2025.

Kola was found guilty of misconduct after video evidence showed him attempting to attack the referee with a stone. The GFA’s ruling, based on the referee’s report and footage of the incident, stated that his actions violated the statutes of the football governing body. As a result, Kola has been warned that any future misconduct could lead to more severe sanctions, including a potential lifetime ban from Ghanaian football.

The disciplinary action extends beyond Kola, as five club officials—George Wiredu, Seth Armstrong, Kelvin Aboagye, Joshua Kyibazah, and Kingsley Arther—have also been suspended for the remainder of the season. They have each been fined GHS 10,000 for storming the pitch to confront match officials in the controversial fixture.

The incident occurred at the Ndoum Stadium after a contentious penalty was awarded to Swedru All Blacks in the 12th minute, which resulted in the only goal of the match. Elmina Sharks players and supporters expressed outrage, with club owner Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom describing the referee’s decision as “dubious.” The post-match tension escalated into chaos, leading to Kola’s violent outburst.

In response, the GFA emphasized its commitment to tackling hooliganism in Ghanaian football and reinforcing discipline to safeguard match officials. The association has also instructed Elmina Sharks to educate players and officials on proper conduct and respect for referees.

Elmina Sharks have the right to appeal the decision within seven days. The GFA has warned that future cases of violence against match officials will attract even harsher penalties.
