Gold Coast 2018 Day 4: Hor, Gemma, Flings into Women’s 100m Semis

All three of Ghana’s sprinters in the women’s events at the on-going Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, Hor Halutie,  Gemma Acheampong and Flings Owusu-Agyapong are through to tonight’s semi finals of the women’s 100m event after mixed performances in the Heats.

19 year old Hor, finished first in Heat 1 with a new Personal Best (PB) of 11.45sec, beating her previous PB by 200th of a second.

In Heat 3, Gemma Acheampong finished 3rd with a Season’s Best time of 11.62sec in Heat 3 while medal hopeful Flings Owusu-Agyepong could only manage a 5th place finish in Heat 5 but still qualified as one of the fastest losers with a time of 11.74sec.

The semi finals will start at 7:12am later this morning.

In the men’s 100m event, Sarfo Ansah and Sean Safo Antwi missed out of a place in the semi finals after finishing 4th and 5th respectively in their heats.

Safo Antwi, who made the 60m World Indoor Finals earlier this year, could only manage a 5th place finish in Heat 7 with a time of 10.95sec while Sarfo Ansah, the GUSA Games champion, ran a Season’s Best of 10.41sec in Heat 8, which was won by Jamaica’s Yohan Blake.

In the day’s earlier events, Abeku Jackson powered to the semi finals with a 5th place finish in the men’s 100m butterfly swimming event with a new PB of 54.79sec while Maaya Ayawere finished 3rd in the heats of the women’s 100m Freestyle event with a time of 1:04:71sec.

Abeku returns to the Optus Aquatic Ceter at 10:58am for the semi finals.

Day 4 will also see Ghana compete in Boxing with Musah Rahman Lawson taking part in the men’s 75kg category.
