Gomoa West Showdown: Captain Smart’s NDC Membership Card Pops Up

Famous and outspoken Ghanaian broadcast-journalist Captain Smart has clarified that he is a registered member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in good standing and fully qualified to contest the Gomoa West parliamentary seat in 2028, as per the rules, regulations, and structures of the party.

“I have my party membership card, and I am in good standing. I have had the card more than number of years required of a member to contest parliamentary primary. There have been Ghanaians who even came from abroad to contest seats in this country, so far as they met the requirements. But I have not come from abroad; I am here. I have been here. I am not a stranger coming from somewhere and trying to force myself on anybody,” Captain Smart, officially known as Blessed Godsbrain Smart, told The New Publisher.

The broadcast-journalist turned politician said he is no novice to the gamesmanship and machinations of competitive politics, and therefore will not be intimidated by party gatekeepers who falsely allege he lacks a membership card and then mistake that untrue claim for a lack of political relevance, marketability and tenacity.

Explaining further, Captain Smart said he hails from the constituency by birth. He schooled and lived there. Both his parents are from the constituency, and his grandparents are from the same constituency.

“Gomoa West is my constituency. That is where I come from. I am a typical Gomoa man. My father is from Gomoa Ogua, and my mother is from Gomoa Tarkwa. But we migrated from Gomoa Denkyira, which is also in the constituency, to Gomoa Tarkwa, which is also in the constituency. And then my grandfather married my grandmother from Gomoa Tarkwa in this same constituency.”

Captain Smart confirmed he has made his intentions and the compelling motivation behind them known to the incumbent MP, Richard Gyan-Mensah, who doubles as the Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition:

“My people are suffering, and I can be of help to them. I have not hidden my intention. I went to tell the MP that I will contest him. He panicked. Yes, he sat in his chair, looking at me, scared. Oh yeah, I will contest him because my people are suffering. If we should look for a definition to personify suffering, maybe it would be Gomoa West. I told him that he himself knows my people are suffering.”

Captain Smart explained that the constituency is a community of 78 towns and villages, and the major problem is that they do not have potable water to drink. He said the current plan by leadership to provide the constituents 25 boreholes within three years is not enough and that the proposed strategy lacks the requisite sense of urgency required to provide succor to a suffering people.

“You said you were drilling five boreholes last year, ten this year, and ten next year; that makes 25 boreholes in three years. And the people would have to keep suffering because of water?”, Smart questioned.

He noted further: “I just went into the constituency, and I have mobilized to get them 35 mechanized boreholes. In all, I am doing 50 mechanized boreholes for my people to stop them suffering because of water. I am sending 20 large water reservoir tanks there this week, aside from the other things I am doing to alleviate the suffering of my people. We are sponsoring people to go into fashion college and other employable skills.”
