Gov’t Embarks On Intensive Market Disinfection Exercise Across The Country

The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Local government and rural development has embarked on an intensive disinfection exercise across all regions in Ghana. The exercise is in partnership with Zoomlion Ghana limited, and it is expected to cover all markets across the various regions in the country.

This move comes as a result of the rise in the coronavirus infection in the country, as government intensifies its efforts at reducing the spread of the virus. The disinfection exercise is expected to last for one week, and targets important market centres in all regions of the country. Zoomlion Ghana Limited, in collaboration with the municipal assemblies, is expected to fumigate and disinfect at least 186 markets in all 25 municipalities in the Ashanti region.

The exercise which begun on Monday is expected to end today  22nd July 2020 for the Ashanti regional exercise after which other regions such as the Bono and Northern regions will follow. Speaking at the launch of the exercise which took place at the Golden Jubilee park in Kumasi, the mayor, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi expressed optimism about the success of the exercise.

He noted that the municipal assembly has put in place measures to ensure that the fumigation of the various markets will be successful. He also noted that as part of the advanced strategies to rid the markets off unnecessary waste, an extensive clean up exercise of the various markets ahead of the disinfection was done on Monday, 20th July 2020.

He also revealed that, as part of governments efforts in lowering the spread of the coronavirus infection, donations have been made in the form of personal protective equipment, sanitary products, veronica buckets, hand sanitisers among others to schools, hospitals and other public places of gathering. He commended the work of zoomlion and the entire frontline disinfection team including the ministry for their continuous support in the fight against the spread of the coronavirus.

The regional minister, Hon.Simon Osei-Mensah assured the public of government’s continuous support in the fight against the coronavirus. He said that the current government under the leadership of HE Nana Akufo Addo is relentless in their efforts in lowering the spread of the virus in the country. According to him, strategic investments in the health sector, partnerships with private companies and aggressive efforts have been put in place to help fight the pandemic.

He called on the media and all relevant stakeholders to assist in educating the public on the safety protocols that have been outlined by the Ghana Health Service and the World Health Organization. According to him, information is one of the most vital weapons against the spread of the virus and the media have a responsibility that the right information gets to the public.He also commended the work of all stakeholders, especially zoomlion, in the fight against the infection and called for more public support in the fight against the spread of the disease.

Preventive measures

According to the Ghana Health Service, the following preventive measures should be observed in lowering the spread and preventing the coronavirus;
**Stay at home; Observe social distancing; Avoid handshaking
**Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
**Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, dispose the tissue in a closed bin, and then wash your hands.
**Always wear a mask, particularly when leaving home
**Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
**Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects or surfaces such as remote controls and doorknobs.
**Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Ghana’s case count currently stands at 28,939 with about 3000 active cases.
