A wedding celebration turned into a dramatic arrest scene when a 28-year-old driver, Samuel Issah Abdulai was arrested at his ceremony for allegedly defrauding multiple people in a visa scam.
Abdulai, who promised to secure electronic visas for Mongolia, Georgia, Albania, and Malaysia, allegedly deceived three complainants into handing over GH₵352,000.
Instead of embarking on his honeymoon, he found himself before an Accra Circuit Court facing three counts of defrauding by false pretenses and forgery of documents. However, he pleaded not guilty.
Presiding Judge Samuel Bright Acquah granted him bail at GH₵150,000 with three sureties, one of whom must justify the bail. The court also ordered him to report to the police every two weeks.
Prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Daniel Danku, disclosed that the complainants, traders Ohenewa Sarah and Matilda Ayaaba, and businesswoman Aisha Ahmed, all reside in Accra, while Abdulai is based in Nkawie in the Ashanti Region.
Between September and December 2024, Abdulai and an accomplice, identified as Antwi, allegedly posted online advertisements promising visas for Belarus, Andorra, Albania, and Malaysia. Posing as someone based in Belarus, he convinced the victims he could facilitate their travel.
Sarah paid him GH₵47,000, Matilda handed over GH₵55,000, and Aisha, who also collected money from 11 other individuals, gave him GH₵250,000. After collecting the funds via his mobile money account, Abdulai vanished.
In December 2024, he resurfaced, sending what he claimed were electronic visas to the complainants via WhatsApp. However, suspicion arose, leading the victims to verify the documents with Ghana Immigration’s DFEC Unit, which confirmed they were fake.
Determined to seek justice, the complainants tracked Abdulai down and apprehended him at his wedding ceremony in Nkawie, handing him over to the police at Teshie.
With his case now in court, Abdulai’s wedding day will be remembered not for love and vows, but for deception and a dramatic arrest.
