JUST GO! – Minority Tells Embattled Diplomat

The Minority in Parliament has maintained it wants Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, George Ayisi Boateng to resign over his “shameful utterances.”

The opposition lawmakers in a statement Thursday said the top diplomat has demonstrated by his actions that he lacks the right temperament to represent Ghanaians in a foreign country.

Minority Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa described as unacceptable, Mr Ayisi-Boateng’s posture after the comment.

“…H.E Ayisi Boateng even in the face of overwhelming condemnation and revulsion from many decent-minded Ghanaians still chose to adopt a more belligerent, reckless and divisive posture,” the statement said.

The top diplomat has been widely condemned after he said he will prioritise the needs of the youth of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) over others.

Although he has retracted and apologized for his comment after a meeting with the Foreign Affairs Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey Wednesday, the Minority said it was half-hearted.

“…we have confirmed that the said public apology would not have been rendered by the disgraced envoy if he had not been forced by his superiors at the Flagstaff House,” the statement read.

After a thorough scrutiny of the apology letter, the Minority said the diplomat rather expressed remorse for violating portions of the 1992 Constitution, instead of apologizing for his “unconscionable remark.”

The NDC MPs claim Ghanaians living in South Africa have registered their displeasure and “sense of insecurity” under Mr Ayisi Boateng as the government representative.

With the diplomat lacking the temperament required of High Commissioners, the Minority has asked him to resign or be forced out.

“The Minority is compelled to maintain its stance that H.E. George Ayisi Boateng should resign failing which he should respectfully be re-called by H.E. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with immediate effect,” the statement concluded.
