Kofi Bentil condemns govt over Laboma

Senior Vice President and Policy Analyst at IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil has criticised the government over the demolition of structures at Laboma Beach, describing the exercise as a serious failure by authorities to properly control development.

Hours after the demolition, Bentil, posting on his Facebook page  said government should not allow investors to develop properties for years, collect taxes, rates and levies from them, and later declare the developments illegal and demolish them.

“It is extreme failure of government and a serious aberration for a government, local or national, to fail in its duty to control development and allow an investor to spend millions developing property and watch them for years as they develop, and then send people to collect taxes and rates and levies for years and then turn around after the development is done to claim that it’s illegal and proceed to demolish everything and waste the investment,” he said.

He described the situation as a failure of duty on the part of government.

“It is the height of despicable dereliction of duty and a most abhorrent and condemnable failure … shame on you!!” Bentil added.

His comments come after the Post-Flood Mitigation Taskforce began a major demolition exercise at Laboma Beach in Accra on September 13, 2026.

The operation, supported by the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Army, targeted structures along waterways and reclaimed wetlands within the Kpeshie Lagoon buffer zone.

The government has said the exercise forms part of efforts to restore waterways and improve their capacity to contain floodwaters after years of illegal reclamation, sand filling and development.
