President John Dramani Mahama has told the Finance Minister to set aside more than GH¢200 million in the 2027 Budget to complete the Police Hospital expansion project in Accra.
The project will provide a 12-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), MRI and CT scan machines, and a new accident and emergency centre.
Speaking on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at the opening of an 85-bed ward block at the hospital, President Mahama said the government plans to finish the expansion and start using the new facilities before the end of 2027.
He said the expansion will add 106 beds to the hospital, bringing the total to more than 300.
The completed facility will also have 11 consulting rooms, four children’s consulting rooms, three general surgical theatres, an orthopaedic theatre, an endoscopy unit, and a mortuary that can hold 222 bodies.
President Mahama said Cabinet decided to end the contract for the expansion project after 22 years of delays, long disagreements, and rising costs with the contractor.
“Our contract has been going on for 22 years. We have finally brought it to an end. We’re going to complete it ourselves,” he said.
Two ambulances were also given to the hospital to help with emergencies and patient care.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said the new ward block has raised the hospital’s bed capacity to a little over 200.
The Medical Director of the hospital, Commissioner of Police (COP) Dr Samuel Otu-Nyarko, said the extra 85 beds will reduce pressure on the hospital. He said the total bed capacity is now 205.
Dr Otu-Nyarko said the new building has been named the Christian Tetteh Yohuno Ward Complex.
