Majority of secular music are great— Yaw Sarpong

VETERAN Gospel musician, Yaw Sarpong has revealed content in majority of secular songs are much better than those of some Gospel music.

According to the Wayɛ Awie hitmaker who has been in the industry for about four decades, a song like CCTV by King Promise among other secular trump today’s Gospel songs which merely cast a lot of insinuations at supposed enemies.

“I have had the opportunity to listen to a lot of secular songs and Gospel songs and I must say that I prefer the secular ones. Although not all the songs are good, the majority are great.

“There is nothing wrong with singing love songs and I hold nothing against secular musicians singing about love,” he said.

Yaw Sarpong said he enjoys listening to Sarkodie and has hopes of collaborating with him on a song. “Sarkodie is one of the musicians I admire so much and the two of us are in talks for collaboration soon,” he disclosed to Showbiz.

Meanwhile, Yaw Sarpong is on a countrywide tour to promote peace ahead of the 2020 elections. It may seem too early for such an initiative but the 53-year-old tells Showbiz, we cannot afford to compromise on the peace we are enjoying today.

“I was a witness to the Liberian war and I know what it did to the country. I don’t want the same thing to happen in Ghana and that is why I have taken the initiative to start this peace campaign,” he said.

Already, he has had two successful concerts in Kumasi; one at Adum and the other at the Central Market and he tells Showbiz the next one is in Accra.

According to Yaw Sarpong, he has already spent Gh¢10,000 on his tour and needs more support. “The long term tour is huge and I need the support of everyone. Although I am trying, I am pleading that everyone comes on board.

“We have sponsors like Givers Power Capsules, Nana Kabo Enterprise, Turn Star Micro Finance and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, we still need more” he said.

Known for popular songs like Wayɛ Awie, Esther, Judas, Yenka Nkyere Agya (Joseph) and Hawa, Yaw Sarpong is also preparing for the release of his 26th album titled The Nine.
