Man Arrested Over GH¢1.1m Fake Gold Fraud

A 36-year-old man, Gyamfi Christian, has been arrested by the Bono Regional Police Command for his alleged involvement in a fake gold deal that led to a gold aggregator losing GH¢1.1 million in the Berekum Municipality.

Gyamfi Christian was arrested on August 17, 2026, at his hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District following intelligence-led investigations into the suspected fake gold syndicate.

The case was reported to the Police by 29-year-old gold aggregator Christopher Awuni, who said four men claiming to be gold sellers sold him 110 troy ounces of gold for GH¢1.1 million in July 2026.

The gold was later tested and found to be fake. The suspected fake gold has since been retained by the Police as an exhibit as investigations continue.

According to the Bono Regional Police Command, the suspect admitted his involvement in the transaction during interrogation and disclosed that the deal took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.

“During interrogation, he admitted involvement in the transaction and disclosed that it took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.”

The Police said Gyamfi Christian also identified three other persons allegedly involved in the deal. They are Abraham, alias Frenchman, who is believed to be the leader of the group, Isaac Antwi and Balthazar.

The three alleged accomplices are currently at large, with the Police working to locate and arrest them.

Preliminary investigations have also linked the suspected group to another alleged fraud case. Police said the group is suspected of defrauding another victim of GH¢1.4 million in a separate gold transaction at Drobo earlier this year.

The development has raised concerns about the need for greater caution among people who engage in gold transactions, particularly when large amounts of money are involved.

The Bono Regional Police Command is therefore advising members of the public to properly verify gold and the identity of sellers before making payments. The Police are also asking the public to report suspicious activities that could help prevent similar cases.

“The Bono Regional Police Command urges the public to exercise caution when engaging in gold transactions and report suspicious activities to the Police.”

Gyamfi Christian remains in Police custody and is assisting with investigations as the Police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged syndicate and trace the remaining suspects.

The Police have also appealed to members of the public who may have information on the whereabouts or activities of Abraham, alias Frenchman, Isaac Antwi and Balthazar to come forward and assist with the investigation.

The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by the Bono Regional Police Command to track down persons suspected of using fake gold to defraud members of the public.
