The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man, Bukari Yakubu, at his residence in Akatsi in the Volta Region for possessing 92 slabs of a substance suspected to be Indian Hempcommonly known as weed.
In an early morning swoop, the suspect, Bukari was arrested at 1:00am on Saturday, May 10, 2025, following weeks of undercover surveillance.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest in a statement shared on their Facebook wall revealing that the operation was intelligence-led and part of a broader crackdown on drug trafficking in the Volta Region.
According to the police, a search of Bukari’s residence led to the discovery of 92 compressed slabs of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp. The slabs were neatly wrapped in yellowish material. In addition to the drugs, officers also found two Royal motorbikes, which they suspect were stolen.
Preliminary interrogation revealed that the suspect admitted owning the seized items. He is currently in custody and assisting police with investigations. Authorities say he will be arraigned before court soon.
“Investigation conducted so far indicates that Bukari Yakubu has been dealing in narcotics within Akatsi and its surrounding areas.

Upon preliminary interrogation, the suspect admitted ownership of the items,” the police noted.
This arrest is part of a growing effort by security agencies to clamp down on the illegal drug trade and organised crime. Over the past year, similar intelligence-led operations have led to several high-profile arrests and the seizure of large quantities of narcotics.
Residents of Akatsi, a town in the Volta Region, have expressed concern in recent months about the increasing presence of illegal drugs and the impact on the youth. Many locals are welcoming the police action as a step in the right direction.
Security experts have praised the use of intelligence and surveillance in the operation, noting that it is more effective in dismantling criminal networks.
The Ghana Police Service has promised to remain vigilant and encouraged the public to continue sharing information that could help in fighting crime.
For now, Bukari Yakubu awaits his day in court as investigations continue into the full scale of his alleged operations.
