Messi Becomes World Cup All-Time Leading Scorer

A decade after announcing his retirement from international football in frustration and heartbreak, Lionel Messi continues to redefine greatness on the global stage.

In 2016, following Argentina’s Copa America final defeat to Chile, Messi declared that his international career was over. Having endured four major final losses in nine years and missed a crucial penalty in the shootout against Chile, the Argentine icon admitted he could no longer bear the disappointment.

“For me, the national team is over. I’ve done all I can. It hurts not to be a champion,” he said at the time.

Ten years later, however, the football world is witnessing a vastly different story. At nearly 39 years old and still leading reigning world champions Argentina, Messi has once again etched his name into football history, becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history.

His decision to reverse that retirement has ushered in one of the most successful periods in Argentine football. Since returning, Messi has captained Argentina to consecutive Copa America titles and famously guided the nation to World Cup glory in 2022, ending a 36-year wait for the trophy. He scored seven goals during that tournament, including a memorable brace in the final.

On Monday, exactly 40 years after Diego Maradona’s legendary performance against England at the 1986 World Cup, Messi delivered another historic display. The Argentine captain scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over Austria, further cementing his status as one of football’s greatest players.

The match did not begin smoothly for Messi, who missed an eighth-minute penalty. Yet, true to his resilient nature, he recovered magnificently. Thirty minutes later, he calmly slotted home his first goal of the game to register his 17th World Cup goal, surpassing Germany’s Miroslav Klose as the tournament’s outright leading scorer.

He added his second goal deep into stoppage time, squeezing the ball past two defenders from a tight angle to take his tally to 18 World Cup goals.

The achievement further highlights the extraordinary longevity of the Argentine superstar. Remarkably, 12 of his 18 World Cup goals have come after his 35th birthday, underlining his ability to evolve and remain effective at the highest level.

Messi is currently appearing in his sixth World Cup and continues to defy expectations. His intelligence, movement, and technical brilliance have compensated for any physical decline, allowing him to remain Argentina’s most influential player.

The statistics behind his performances are equally astonishing. He has scored all five of Argentina’s goals at the current tournament and leads the scoring charts. Against Austria, he became only the third player in World Cup history to score in six consecutive tournament matches, joining France’s Just Fontaine and Brazil’s Jairzinho.

In addition to his goalscoring exploits, Messi remains one of the tournament’s most creative players. He holds the record for the most chances created in World Cup history with 76 and has contributed directly to 12 goals in his last six World Cup appearances, scoring 10 and assisting two.

Former players and pundits have once again reignited the debate over whether Messi is the greatest footballer of all time. Many point to his football intelligence, consistency, and ability to influence games as qualities that set him apart from every other player in history.

Despite the celebrations, the match also produced an unwanted statistic. By missing his first-half penalty, Messi became the first player to fail from the spot at the 2026 World Cup. He now holds the record for both the most penalties taken and the most penalties missed in World Cup history, excluding shootouts.

However, the miss ultimately proved insignificant as Messi responded with two superb goals to secure victory for Argentina.

With Argentina already through to the knockout stages and another group match against Jordan still to come, the possibility of further records remains very real. Messi is currently level with Maradona on eight World Cup assists and could surpass another Argentine legend before the tournament concludes.
