Mo Salah Is the Greatest African EPL Player – Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard has made a bold claim about Mohamed Salah, calling Liverpool’s star ‘probably’ the greatest African player in Premier League history.

Salah is undeniably enjoying a fine campaign for the Anfield club, with his 32 goals scored in all competitions just four behind Robbie Fowler’s single-season record for Liverpool.

He is on course to break that record with ease, and if the Reds keep hold of the Egypt international, they are certain to seriously challenge for silverware over the coming years.

However, it seems crazy to call Salah the finest African player in Premier League history, considering the incredible talent that has been in the division since it was formed in 1992.

However, that is what Gerrard did, while answering a question on BT Sport.

Asked if Salah is the greatest African in the history of the Premier League, the Liverpool legend responded: “It’s a tough one. Yes, probably.

“I think you have to wait to see how he finishes the season, but if he continues to get goals and set a record, then you have to say yes.”

That claim does a real disservice to the Toure brothers, Kolo and Yaya, Lauren, Nwankwo Kanu, Michael Essien, Yakubu, Jay-Jay Okocha, Emmanuel Adebayor, Tony Yeboah, as well as the player who can take the title of the greatest African player in Premier League history – Didier Drogba.

Even Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez’s probably ranks higher than Salah at this moment in time, considering he’s won a Premier League title and been named PFA Players’ Player and Fans’ Player of the Year.

Salah has some way to go to rank among these African legends, but if he continues to perform as he has been, it will not be long before the 25-year-old joins the eminent names on this illustrious list.
