A daring mobile money (MoMo) vendor fought back against two armed robbers in Lashibi, Greater Accra, killing one of the attackers in a fierce gun battle and recovering the entire GH₵140,000 they had stolen.
The Ghana Police Service reported that the robbery occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026, when two armed men riding on a motorbike allegedly ambushed the victim while he was driving home after work with a bag containing GH₵140,000.
In a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service, the suspects opened fire on the victim’s vehicle in an attempt to force him to stop and enable them to make away with the cash.
Police said the gunshots damaged the vehicle’s right rear tyre and shattered its front windscreen during the attack.
The police statement further revealed that the events took a dramatic turn after the suspects seized the bag and attempted to flee the scene. The victim reportedly returned fire, hitting one of the suspected robbers, who died at the scene, while the other accomplice managed to escape, abandoning the stolen bag containing the entire GH₵140,000. The victim escaped the attack without sustaining any injuries.
A search conducted on the deceased suspect uncovered an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines loaded with a total of 55 rounds of live ammunition, an additional 11 rounds of live ammunition, GH₵3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone, and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46.
“Preliminary investigations established that the victim was attacked by two armed men on a motorbike while driving home after work with a bag containing GH₵140,000. The suspects allegedly fired at the victim’s vehicle, causing damage to the right rear tyre and front windscreen, and made away with the cash.”
The statement added: “Further investigations revealed that after the suspects had snatched the complainant’s bag containing GH₵140,000 and were attempting to escape on their motorbike, the complainant fired at them, and one of the suspects died at the scene. The other suspect fled the scene, abandoning the complainant’s bag containing the GH₵140,000, which was subsequently recovered. The complainant did not sustain any injuries.
“A search conducted on the deceased suspect led to the retrieval of an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines containing a total of fifty-five (55) rounds of live ammunition, an additional eleven (11) rounds of live ammunition, GH₵3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone, and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46. Police also recovered five AK-47 spent shells and two pistol spent shells from the scene.”

- The Accra Regional Police Command assures the public of its commitment to combating violent crime and urges anyone with information that may assist in the arrest of the fleeing suspect to report to the nearest Police Station or contact the Police through the emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
