NDC Backs Ahafo Region

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Brong Ahafo Region is totally behind government’s effort towards the creation of Ahafo Region out of the current Brong Ahafo Region, according to Alhaji Collins Dauda.

The former Local Government and Rural Development minister and MP for Asutifi South Constituency said NDC leaders in the area would support and ensure that the creation of the Ahafo Region is achieved.

He assured the Commission of Inquiry Public Hearing at Hwidiem in the Asutifi South District that the leadership of the NDC in the Region is solidly behind the creation of the new region.

Collins Dauda commended president Akufo-Addo’s resolve to meet the long-standing aspirations of chiefs and opinion leaders in the area, and charged NDC members in Brong Ahafo region to campaign for the successful creation of the new region, which according to him, would speed up the socio-economic development of the area.

The Paramount Chief of Yamfo Traditional Area, and Chairman of the Ahafo Council of Chiefs, Nana Ansah Adu Baah, in an earlier interaction with the media, declared the support of the chiefs and people of Ahafo for the creation of the Ahafo Region out of the current Brong Ahafo Region by government.

According to him, the split would not only promote rapid development of the area, but also enhance the country’s decentralization process and strengthen grassroots participatory democracy, and has thus called on all stakeholders to cooperate to ensure that the planned creation of the new region becomes a reality.

Supporting the call, Omanhene of the Bechem Traditional Area, Nana Fosu Gyeabour Akoto II, tended historical facts of initial moves and requests by prominent natives of the area to previous governments.

“We would like to put on record that the fight for Ahafo Region is not a new thing. It dates back to 1986. We have written petitions to authorities since February, 1986; 28th February, 1987; 3rd Dec. 1990; 27thAug, 1991; 7th July, 1994 and Feb, 12th, 2003. The records are there for all to see”, he stated.

He appealed to his people to lead the campaign for the achievement of the Ahafo Region by coming out in their numbers to vote massively in the referendum for its creation.

The Brong Ahafo Region was created on 4th April 1959 (by the Brong Ahafo Region Act No. 18 of 1959) out of the Ashanti Region to help with decentralization in independent Ghana. The Act defined the area of the Brong Ahafo Region to consist of the northern and the western part of the then Ashanti Region and included the Prang and Yeji areas that, before the enactment of the Act, formed part of the Northern Region.

Being the second-largest region in the country, it has 19 administrative districts, and covers an area of 39,557 square kilometres.
