NDC campaigns for Wontumi …to remain Ashanti NPP Chairman

A founding member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Aljahi Saani Senior, is campaigning for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi in an unusual political gymnastics that has raised eyebrows.

“NDC supports Wontumi because he gave a good show in the 2020 elections…We shall do everything possible to ensure Wontumi wins the chairmanship position next year,” Alhaji Saani stated.

Meanwhile the votes of the NPP in the Ashanti Region went down from 76.3% in 2016 to 71.64% in 2020, whereas the NDC’s votes rose from 23.0% to 26.08%.

Under the Wontumi leadership, the NPP lost 4 seats in the Ashanti Region, namely Ejura Sekyedumase, Sekyere Afram Plains, Asawase and New Edubiase constituencies.

Aljahi Senior spoke with Kofi Asante of Akoma FM in Kumasi on Monday: “Wontumi openly made every Ghanaian to believe that he would win all the 47 parliamentary seats in the Ashanti Region, which is the NPPs stronghold, for his party but he failed woefully.

“Wontumi’s famous Agenda 47/47 suffered a big jolt as the NDC managed to win four seats in 2020; he talks big without any action so we would make sure he is retained as NPP chairman to benefit us (NDC)”, he added.

Aljahi Saani noted that, strategically, Antwi Boasiakko’s continuous stay in office would greatly improve the electoral fortunes of the NDC.

According to him, Antwi Boasiako, who is popularly known in political circles as ‘Wontumi’, would freely be offered the support of the entire NDC in the Ashanti Region so as to help him to emerge victorious in the upcoming NPP internal elections.

According to him, Wontumi always make noise in the media but practically, he (Wontumi) is not effective, citing the outcome of the 2020 elections in the Ashanti Region to buttress his case.

Alhaji Saani, who sounded sarcastic, stated emphatically that Wontumi’s continuous stay in office as the Ashanti Regional NPP chairman, would go a long way to help the NDC to amass more votes in the region during the 2024 general election.

The experienced politician said the NDC would not look on unconcerned for the NPP to replace Wontumi with an efficient person as their chairman to make things difficult for the NDC during the next elections.

“The NDC is ready and poised to capture political power from the underperforming NPP in 2024 and with Wontumi as NPP Ashanti Regional chairman, definitely our dream would become a reality workout sweat.

Alhaji Saani stated that with Wontumi as the NPP Ashanti Regional chairman “the NDCs work in the region would become less, because Wontumi only talks without any strategy or action”.
