Brazilian striker Neymar has returned to Santos after 12 years, describing the experience as indescribable.
The 33-year-old rejoined the Brazilian club on January 31 from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, marking his comeback since departing for Barcelona in 2013.
Neymar stepped onto the field at halftime when Santos led 1-0, making an immediate impact despite still recovering from injury. Botafogo, however, fought back to secure a 1-1 draw at Estadio Vila Belmiro.
“I love Santos,” Neymar expressed. “I can’t describe what I felt stepping onto this pitch again. I need more minutes and games to regain full fitness. I didn’t expect to run and dribble so much tonight, but I believe I’ll feel better in four or five matches.”
After the final whistle, several Botafogo players and staff approached Neymar for photos, highlighting his lasting influence in Brazilian football.
Neymar began his professional career with Santos, winning six trophies during his first stint, including the 2011 Copa Libertadores.
By the time he left, he had netted 136 goals in 225 appearances, establishing himself as one of the brightest talents in world football.
His subsequent move to Barcelona and later to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 for a record-breaking £200 million made him the most expensive player in history. However, his transfer to Saudi Arabia in 2022 took a downturn when an anterior cruciate ligament injury limited him to just seven games for Al-Hilal.
Santos, once home to Brazilian legend Pelé, suffered a historic relegation from the top division in 2023. However, they secured an immediate return by winning the Serie B title last season.
With 128 international caps for Brazil, Neymar remains one of the country’s most celebrated footballers.
