No More Removal of Shoes, Belts, Laptops at Accra Airport

Passengers travelling through Accra International Airport can now expect a significantly smoother and faster security screening process, following the deployment of new state-of-the-art technology at Terminals 2 and 3.

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced the installation of advanced screening equipment designed to enhance aviation security while drastically improving passenger convenience.

The upgrade, which comes as part of a broader modernisation of the airport, effectively ends the long-standing requirement for travellers to remove their shoes, belts, and laptops at security checkpoints.

Under the new system, passengers will be permitted to keep their footwear and belts on during routine screening unless they are selected for additional checks through security profiling. Furthermore, laptops and other large electronic devices can now remain inside cabin baggage, eliminating the need to unpack them into separate trays.

The technology also allows liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) to stay inside hand luggage during screening, although the GACL has stressed that the existing aviation security regulation prohibiting containers exceeding 100 millilitres remains strictly in force.

In addition to the advanced scanners, the airport has introduced an Automatic Tray Return System. This new feature is intended to expedite the screening process by automatically returning trays to passengers after inspection, allowing for quicker repacking of belongings and a significant reduction in waiting times and congestion at security points.

The GACL has indicated that the rollout of the new technology will be implemented gradually in phases, operating alongside existing screening procedures to ensure a seamless transition without disrupting airport operations.

The company has appealed for the cooperation of all passengers and stakeholders as the system becomes fully operational in the coming days.

This upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to modernise airport facilities and position Accra International Airport as a leading travel hub in the West African sub-region
